Default heater assy removal

On my 1999 Rodeo, my heater selector dial for the adjustments- def, heater, floor def, is broke. The dial itself is not broke.but the plastic part on the control assy is broke. It was a very cold morning I went to switch the dial to def, and it didn't want to turn all the way, Tired and stressed, I forced the dial(I know I know) and broke some of the plastic that fits inside the dial from the control assy itself. So now I assume I have to replace the whole unit??.. My question... Around the dash on the drivers side, gauges and around the heater is a black plastic insert, it looks almost as if this could be removed to give me room to access the heater without removing the whole dash?? anyone know for sure?? Thanks in ADV
