My 96 rodeo front wheels will not lock in when I put it in 4 wheel high or low.I can here the gears turning in the transfer case but the two front wheels wont lock in together. The light won't come on showing its in 4 wheel drive.

Is this caused by the electric shift on the fly actuator. What is this thing and what does it look like?

Better yet where is it and how do I fix it?Edited by: greentea

Easiest way to found out is take it to your favorite repair shop an have them check it out.

electric shift on a 96'? Just curious. I never knew it was an option on the earlier year rodeos.I always opted for a manual shift on my vehicles because of this problem.

The gen 1.5 ('96-97) have kind of the same set up as the 2nd gen ('98-up). Except you move the shift lever instead of push a button. On gen 1.5 when you shift into 4wd the 4x4 computer checks that its locked in then sends a signal to the front axle actuator to lock in. Your '97 isnt a fully shifted 4wd.
