Just like newspaper headline writers sometimes reality TV show producers just can't be arsed thinking up a catchy quippy title for a new show. Sometimes near enough is good enough. (Actually that could be a great name for a show – write that down.)


So just as you get snooze-inducing story headlines like “MANUFACTURING ACTIVITY FALLS IN APRIL” and “AUSTRALIANS MUCH BETTER OFF NOW: REPORT” you also get TV shows with say-what-you-see titles like “Animal Cops” and “Pit Bulls and Parolees” and “The Ashlee Simpson Show”. (Actually maybe those last two are actually the same thing...? I forget.)


Which brings me to today's I Can't Believe It's A Show graham watches the latest addition to the ever-growing canon of obviously-titled reality programs: The Little Couple.


TRY AND GUESS WHAT IT'S ABOUT.





The series – which by the way is now in its fifth season – revolves around Texan newlyweds Bill Klein and Jen Arnold who both happen to be dwarves under 120cm tall.


You might expect this premise to yield some interesting insights into the life of a “little person”.


Then again there's a reason why “The Little Couple”'s host network TLC is no longer known as “The Learning Channel”.


And thus perhaps in a quest to be politically correct zenith watch replica corum rocket the show doesn't actually seem to focus much on the little couple's... er... “littleness”. Which means you have episode synopses like “Bill decides to spend a Saturday morning at the gym while Jen opts for a spa day” and “rain clouds threaten to ruin Bill and Jen's plans for a fun-filled weekend with friends”.

Maybe this is closed-minded but exactly why does TLC think we're interested in a show called “the little couple” if it's not about the fact that they're LITTLE? There aren't any OTHER shows about people of no discernible talent or uniqueness doing nothing of interest in their every day lives... oh wait... actually... There are heaps. BUT WE DON'T HAVE TO LIKE THEM.


There is a storyline in the show revolving around Jen and Bill's difficult attempts to have a baby that go some way towards actually being informative but mostly “The Little Couple” is about two perfectly nice people in a perfectly nice relationship having a perfectly nice time... interspersed with the occasional exploitative bit of vision like this:




ROFL THEY'RE THE SAME SIZE LOL.
