Default How does a single speed road bike work?

I have a gear'd road bike now and always have it in a middle gear and never really change it because i can handle all my terrain wit one gear. I was thinking of transferring to a single speed as i am looking for a new bicycle, but i want to be able to coast? Can single speeds coast? Also, what gear is a single speed "stuck" on. I mean is it easy, medium, or hard to pedal? Can you get a single speed that is harder to pedal? Thank you
Update: i read that they were easier to maintain, lighter, and cheaper than gear'd
