Default 2000 trooper transmission question

Hey guys. Thanks in advance for your replies. Today I got an amazing deal on a 2000 trooper limited. I went into the deal knowing it had tranny issues. The 4x4 works fine. However, the main 2 wheel drive is in bad shape. Here's what it is doing. In order to move forward I have to put the gear selector in low and begin to roll and then shift on the move up into drive. If I start in drive it won't go anywhere. I can only take off from a dead stop in low. Reverse works fine. The gear selector moves smoothly throughout all gears. There is enough tranny fluid in the pan. Any guess on what I can be looking at before I take it to the shop?
Thanks.

I️ did the same thing(bought an 01 with trans no forwards gears unless you put in low and winter mode) (paid $700) now I’m under the car all week thinking what did I️ get myself into! Anyways drained trans fluid and filter. And drained the transfer case behind tranny. The tech manual says to put sae 40 in it. But in the case of it it says dexron III. I’m adraid to put anything in until I️ know for sure. I️ checked linkage and visually checked wiring. I️ don’t have any codes on obd2 or on the console.
