Default What is a Cooling System Flush?

The cooling system is an essential component of your vehicle. It keeps liquid antifreeze flowing through the system, removing extra heat from your engine, helping to keep the engine running at an efficient operating temperature, and getting the engine to the right temperature as quickly as it can after you start your car. Keeping the cooling system in good order is vital to your vehicle running optimally, so it's important that it be properly maintained.

At certain intervals, you'll need to take your car in for a cooling system flush. Flushing your cooling system:
  • Removes scale deposits and rust. Scale deposits and rust can accumulate in a radiator over time. Flushing helps to take out these deposits, washing it out with the old antifreeze. Removing buildups keeps your vehicle running well, as they can often lead to overheating and damage to your radiator.
  • Removes contaminants. when you flush your system, technicians drain your system of the old antifreeze, flushing out any contaminants that may be in the system. Over time, the coolant's additives may lose some of their anti-corrosive properties, which will lead to a particle buildup. By flushing your radiator, you will take these particles out of the system.
  • Lubricates the water pump. The additives in your coolant serve to lubricate the water pump in your vehicle. This helps to prolong your water pump's lifespan.
  • Protects against foam and rust. The newly added antifreeze will contain additives that prevent buildup and foaming, helping the system to operate more efficiently.
Generally, you will need to flush your cooling system once every five years or every 100,000 miles, depending on your environmental driving conditions and your driving habits. Consulting your vehicle owner's manual is the easiest way to determine the proper maintenance interval. If your vehicle has issues such as the engine overheating, the temperature gauge runs high, or if you detect a maple syrup smell from the engine, these are signs you may need a cooling system flush right away.
