Default Trouble Turning Steering Wheel

Help! I have a 98 Isuzu Rodeo with 171,000 miles on it. I was driving down the interstate today and I took my foot off the accelerator briefly. When I put my foot back on the gas pedal, I felt a short series of vibrations or stuttering through the pedal. The battery light immediately came on, and I noticed it was hard to turn the wheel when I switched lanes. When I pulled into my parking deck, I had to strain very hard to turn the wheel in either direction. I also smelled a slight burning smell. When I stopped, I checked the tires and steering fluid, and they were all ok. What is going on? Is this something I can fix or is it time to get a new car?

Did you check to see if you lost a belt? There should be a total of three.

Love it when someone loins a forum simply to get a bit of free advice, and then doesn't bother to post up later to offer an explanation of what the fix was, so that it may in turn help out the next guy that joins the forum, simply to get a bit of free advice.
