well we thought the brakes were going bad cuz it was making metal noises but when i looked under i saw this was snapped off. what is that stupid thing called? any ideas or foreknowledge of problems to come is welcome....

Looks like the cheapest one is at rockauto.com
although they sent me the wrong parts when I ordered last time
I have used them before.
I am pretty sure that was the part you are in need of.
2 Bolts / Might as well replace them in sets for good measure.
