90 trooper 2.8td fuel starvation cold

Lately on cold mornings it will run for a while but after only fifty metres or so on the road it will starve for fuel and die. It can be easily started by using the hand fuel pump at the fuel filter. The problem occurs eratically and can go for days or weeks between problems....any clues
