Amigo Stalling on startup

Hello everyone,
I have a 99 Isuzu Amigo with the 6 cyl engine in it. The problem I am having is that when I start it the engine will start fine but rev up and stall right away. The only way to keep it running at first is to give it a little gas right after it starts. Afterwards it idles fine and runs great. Is this a common problem and if so what are some possible things that could be wrong? Also, I understand that excessive oil consumption is common for this engine. Has anyone found a method short of rebuilding or replacing that works for decreasing the amount of oil burnt between changes? Any help would be great. Thankyou
