A little background. It's an 89 4 banger. Start it up and within 10 minutes it dies.won't start. Wait sometimes 10 minutes, or sometimes just crank it and it starts again. So i figure it's the coil. Get a new one...same thing...ahhhh must be the ignition switch. Ordered a new one and it started right up and ran all day. Went to pull it into the driveway to change the oil and won't start again. It'll crank all day long and sometimes it will start but today....nothing but hot battery posts from cranking. I am stumped...could this be an elecrical malfunction or a fuel problem???? Sometimes it dies while your driving it.

i'd bet it is the in-line fuel filter, if everything else has been running fine....and this just started "out-of-the-blue"....start with the filter

there is a module in the distributor, even in the 4 cyl, that can go bad, and is pretty common problem. You seem to have eliminated other causes.....are you actually getting fuel to the fuel rail (do you hear the fuel pump come on for a couple seconds, or have you checked for fuel pressure atthe tap?).?


Anyway, if you are sure it is not fuel related, the module is very heat senstive and is known to be intermittent so even if it checks ok on a module checker, it can still cause problems. New one should tell the tale. My guess is the module. Hope this helps. One guys opinion.

When it happens while running does it stutter and buck (off-on-off-on)? Or does it flat out die?

It is a very intermittent type of problem, but in my experience, it will usually just die while driving, or not restart right away after shutting off ignition and then trying to restart while the engine is hot.


I can't say I would be surprised if it bucked a little, but I could not say for sure. Most parts stores have a module checker, but the module may fool the tester if it has not failed completely. It is usually heat that causes it to become erratic.

Thanks for all the input guys. The starting problem is fixed. It was the plug on the side of the coil. The little tits broke off and it slipped out a bit. I thought it was fixed until I drove around the block the other day and it just died while driving it. I mean just quit. Didn't sputter....(a couple of times it shut down, then started again) but usually just shuts down. This morning I just let it run in the driveway and ran for 10 minutes and then .....just stopped. Resarts after the second crank and runs from anywhere from 1 minute to 10 minutes than dies again. I will check the distributor module.


P.S.... I just dropped the tank and put a new fuel pump in it about a month ago so I am eliminating that possibilty for now.
