TOD

Had the TOD go out in the last couple of days with the blinking light all of the time on a 2002 Trooper. The dealer said both TOD sensors are bad. Come on, could that really be the case that two sensors would go bad at the same time, or are they just to lazy or unable to figure out which one it really is?
Now, here is the strange part. I swear that I am getting much better fuel economy with the TOD off with the check light flashing. Got 23 MPG on the highway today on a 100 mile drive. I have never been over 20 in this thing.
I read on a post that a tech explained that the TOD is operational even when the vehicle is out of 4WD Auto. Is this really true?
Can anyone else confirm that they actually got better mileage when the TOD check light was flashing all of the time (not just when in 4Wheel Auto).
Now, this is not for the speculators. Anyone actually replace the Transfer case sensors themselves? Or Techs that can shed any wisdom in getting them out since they are packed up there pretty tight.
