ok-everyone will laugh but last august i replaced the alternator on 95 trooper 3.2dohc 4wd. Probably ruined by the leaking ps hose above it. at any rate-after replacement there was a lot of squealing on start up which disappears after about 2 minutes. I figured it was the tightening of that screw on the slide bolt bracket area on the bottom of the alternator-you know what i mean. Meant to adjust it then-kid left with car for college and now that the car is back-i cant seem to recall how exactly to deal with that nut...do i loosen something -then turn that bolt to loosen/tighten....and am i loosening or tightening? Its charging the battery just fine...I guess i know the answer-i loosen and tighten until i get the desired effect. But how to adjust it? I wish i could recall....or took a picture....

have you tried tightening the belt itself, put a breaker bar on the tensioner, see what happens!

loosen the alternator to bracket bolts, there are only 2. then loosen the tensioner lockbolt located on the side of the tensioner or the locknut on the tensioner bolt itself whichever that setup has. tighten the tensioner bolt down until you have about a 1/2 inch of deflection on the belt between the alternator and the crankshaft pulley. then tighten all the mounting bolts and the tensioner lockbolt. done.
