Default Engine problems unknown in a 94

I have a 94 trooper rs that im having a problem i cant figure out. Autozone etc etc doesnt have the rigth attachment for thier computer for it due to it being pre 96. Ive already put alot of money into this thing and try not to put more than nessicary so I dont want to take it to a shop to get it plugged in.

Heres what its doing. Its got a new starter with less than 1000 miles on it but everytime i go to start it i have to crank for a few seconds and give jsut a hint of gas. Once it starts it revs up to 2.5k rpms for about a minute then idles down to about 900 it does this everytime.

Second sometimes it runs like the beast it is and other times everytime i hit the gas from a stop it bogs down and feels like its going to die(really scary in city traffic)

Third after runningfor a few mins the check engine light comes on.

Ive only had this trooper for less than 1000 miles heres what ive done to it so far. New water pump, new timing belt, new starter, new battery, new gaskets from the valves up including all the gaskets for the plug tubes, new trannie and xfer case gaskets, new plugs, new plug wires, new fuel filter, replaced wiring for heat sensors, new thermostat. Im sure im missing some stuff. Anyone got any idea whats going on everywhere i look has a list of possiblities that are jsut tiring to read, and even mroe when i think about doing it all. Please HELP!

i have the same starting problem. most time i have to fight with it, and attempt to start it three times. I've been told this is a battery issue, with not giving enough power to crank. But if you have a new battery.....well then i'm stumped.

the second thing happens to me as well, and i have no clue what it is. i usually throw it in neutral at a red light, and if the idle goes down, i gas it for 2 or so seconds. it might possibly be a fuel pump issue.

the check engine light always comes on in these truck, even the newer ones, i took apart my dash and took the light out.

Hopefully this helps you somewhat. These are great trucks, and they will live up to their name.

I'm having a similar issue. I was going along on the freeway (about 80 mph) in my '91 Trooper, and it almost was like I ran out of gas....but no sputtering, just instant loss of acceleration.

Now it won't start, it just turns over and occasionally backfires through the air cleaner. Is this a problem with the fuel system or do you think my motor is toast?

I can't find any water in the oil like a head gasket issue, and I can't think of anything else....and yes I have about a quarter tank of gas. Any ideas would be awesome!

just because the speedometer says it'll do 90mph, doesnt mean it will.

The fastest i've got my 90 trooper without any sputting, virbation or any troubles was 65mph.

These aren't nascar engines. They're little motors, that are mainly torque based engines, geared more towards offroading.

guys - I would agree with wheily that this sounds like it could be IAC (idle air control) on the TBI (thottle body). pick up a new one at NAPA (or your fav auto parts house) for about $35 - $40. Be sure to read the install instructions and keep the pintle length below 28 mm. Trooper V6s are phiniky (sp) about emissions stuff. Make sure all of your vacum lines are on right and have no breaks in them. Also, if you are getting a check engine light, ask your auto shop if they can do a OBD 1 diagnostic (pre '96 OBD 2). Sometimes you can trace back the problem from the ECM (i.e. the vehicles computer that controls your emissions and fuel components) check engine trouble codes.

Also, wheily, if you check the VIN on that s10 for engine type, you might find that it is the same engine as your trooper V6. I'd be curious to know.

Just a guess based on your description, but I bet with a pic looking down on the car towards the front of the engine we could help with this. Unfortunately your description is to vague, and I would guess that you wont get any comments without a little more information. If the pic doesnt help us narrow down mechanical problems, we can move on to the next steps...

Could also be EGR Valve. Can be replaced for about $150, or cleaned with a can of sea foam.
