egr system failure in 94 trooper?

Back again and still trying to keep the old horse on the road. Have a 1994 trooper with 216k on it. Been having intermitent problems with the fuel system sensors in the past year and been trying to trouble shoot it and replace parts but have come up against a wall. The normal code was a #44 which said O2 sensor, lean exhaust. So I got the egr valve off and it was pretty bad. it was opened up, and badly carboned up. I cleaned it out with a glass blaster and seemed to work fine. Put it back together and truck worked great for about a week, mileage went from 15 to 18 as well. AFter a week or so it thru another code, #32, EGR system falilure, as well as the code 44, and started sucking fuel again. Egr seemed to be working fine, so I replace the map sensor and the little filter/ vacumn baffle just above the egr valve. There was some burnt oil in these items, not alot, but they were wet and I know they shouldn't be. Code continued to come back after reseting the computer, so I replaced the EGR valve and the problem continued. The motor runs pretty good, just using alot of gas and seems to idle fast. Mechanic friend suggested it might be a blocked-up catalitic converter and backing up the exhaust into the intake, causing blowby into the intake. So, tired of buying parts to no avail. Any ideas out there?
