Transmission/check engine lights come on periodically, stay on for a month or two and go off again. Car runs fine. Dealer doesn't know why. Anybody have any idea what's happening? 1996 Trooper, 57K miles.Edited by: myleshoy

dealer should know, esp if you took it to them with the light still on.there are alot of reasons for this problem.......trans an check engine both come on at the same time for...voltage problems.with the alternator, fluid temp too high from slipping, torque converter slipping, speed sensor, speed odmeter working? if you take the vehicle to them with the lights on dont turn off the truck,or the codes can erase.they should be able to give you a diffinate answer.the most common problem is the trans is proably slipping not so much that you can feel it but enough that the pcm can detect,

yah, he's right. the dealer must give you a definite answer to that. always check out your lights and you yourself must have some idea too how all lights in your buggy works out so you'll know what you're up to whenever stuff like this happens.
