Check engine light
 

I just purchased my second Trooper, a 2000 with 91,000 miles on it. I flew to Seattle to get it and drove it to home to Phoenix, no problem. However, about 900 miles into the trip, the check engine light came on. The next gas fill I switched to high test and soon, the light went off. When I later tried to run medium test (whatever you call it) through, the light came back on.

I took it to the local Chevy dealership and they were worth than useless. Any thoughts on this? It also burns oil when driving long distances but it doesn't seem to around town.

First thing would be to have it scanned for CEL error codes, since the CEL went off on it's own (if I read correctly) one may not have been set. If not, get it scanned immediately if the CEL comes on again. Once you get a code it may point you in a direction for troubleshooting.

As for the oil consumption, is it actually being burned? Can you see it in the exhaust? These engines are no for using (not burning) a good bit of oil, some worse than others. I changed mine every 3500 mi or so and it would be down a quart in that time. That's real low consumption.

No, my hub drove behind me and there is no evidence of oil burning. And apparently it only burns oil when I drive long distances, not in town. Weird.
