Hi guys i was offered an 1988 isuzu trooper for 1200
bucks, i can probably get it lower. I want it mostly to take it to Baja Mexico, and use it on the dirt roads and take it to the beach, i am going to use this vehicle for about 6 months continuously. I want to know how reliable are 88 troopers, how good do they perform on the sand? This one in particular is supposed to have a performance Cam, and a new rebuilt engine. What is the MPG that i can expect in this vehicle is a 2.6lt Thanks for all the info. Gonzalo |
Check all the basics. I have a 1984 and a 1991. On the 84 I have pretty much replaced all the pivot point linkage. Leaf spring bushings, front upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends, etc., especially for use in the sand. Get wide tires and drop the pressure for use on sand. (onboard compressor for refills would be sweet). Also, check for rust in teh critical areas (fender wells, etc.). I''ve had the 84 for about 12 years. if you have any more questions, let me know.

The 2.6l are known for blowing or cracking their heads. Watch out for that. check your vacuum lines and also make sure your temp guage works to avoida blown head gasket. With normal stock tires a 2.6l will get youaround 16-21 mpg''s.I agree a wider tire will help in the sand. You can fit up to a 33" tire on a Trooper with a little rubbing. 31"s in my opinion are the best as it provides a nice wide tire with mininal loss in power and mpg. With 32"s the power and mpg will drop by alot and at 33"s your going to need new gearing if you don''t want to look down and see a turtle moving faster than you. Good Luck! |
