Default '98 Trooper Starting Issues

Hey everyone, new to the forum. I have a '98 Trooper that I've had since new. It's in great shape, but the strangest issue just came up. It started fine yesterday, now today it turns over fine, but will only start if I give it gas...then will die if I let off the gas with the check engine light on. Engine sounds fine when running, all fluids are topped off. Strangest thing..any ideas out there?

Power

Check your codes.
That will lead you in the right direction.
Sounds like fuel pressure regulator or TPS.
Also might want to check air filter and the plastic housing to the throttle body for cracks/hole.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the response. I'm not touching a thing until I get the code read. I'm hoping it's something simple, I'll let everyone know what we find.

Hope this helps. Advance Auto Parts will scan it for you for free. But you have to get it there. If you get the code/codes the scanner should tell you what they mean or tell me what they tell you and I can look it up in my Service manuals.

Hope this helps.

My 88 Trooper 2 also has starting problem. Sometimes will start and other times it won't. If you turn key and wait til you hear the fuel pump stop clicking it will start. Haven't ckd the fuel pressure output but intend to. My book says fuel pump is not in the tank but haven't been able to locate it so far. Anyone had this problem???

I have no idea what book you are looking in but the fuel pump IS in the tank. If looking at the rear of the Trooper it is in the tank on the left rear topside of the tank. You have to drop or angle the tank to remove it. You have to release the fuel fill line, the wiring, the vent lines etc. then remove straps. Of course you will need to support the tank so you can get to the 5 or 6 phillips-head screws out that hole the pump in. I used ratchet straps and a friend as you do NOT want to round out the screws. Then you end up breaking them off in the tank etc. and you do not want to go there.

Hope this helps.
