A friend recently gave me his 1991 Trooper and it needs tires. I would prefer to go with something a little wider than stock. What size tire can I go to and not affect the speedometer?

If you have the 15x7 rims you can run 31x10.50s if its the 15x6 rims its 235x75x15 if that helps kudos

How can I tell what size rims I have without taking the tires off? Thanks!

I would be less concerned with the effect on the speedometer than the effect on gearing. Too tall of tires will take fifth gear from you while robbing power and gas milage. A good grade of 235X15 will do very well on the trooper. take care. Bob

Yeah a mild lift 2-4 inchs would be good and allow you to run a 31x10.50 with comfert but stock with same work well,or you can find 235x15s would work well also and as to what you have just look at the side of the tire

i just purchased new tires for my trooper and i went with 31-10.50-R15''s. that size is a factory option for the 88-91 troopers. i still have plenty of power but i did lose about 2-4 miles per gallon. they fit without rubbing on a stock 91 troop with 2.6 4 cylinder. i hope that helps
