I have a trooper that was loaned to me - a '99 4WD Auto - but when I went to pick it up, the engine siezed up. I have seen a bit of discussion on this being a problem with Troopers of that vintage, but was wondering if it is a common problem or a random event? Does anyone have any insight to it?

Ineed to decide whether to repair the vehicle - replace the engine, a fun project - or to write it off. The vehicle itself is in very good condition having been gently used. But, a $3,000 cost of a rfeplacement short block is probably as much as the vehicle is worth at this point. I don't mind the work, but I want to make sure that I won't blow another engine five miles down the road.

Please give me any insight around.

Thanks!

Sorry for the almost duplicate message. The forum error processor said this post wasn't done and I posted another before I thought to check if it was there for real or not.

Yes, there is a known history on this motor...owners either seem to get a good one or a bad one...not too many in between. It is also an expensive motor to repair when it does go bad.

Here is a link to a very informative discussion on this motor.

I hope this helps you make up your mind.

Thanks for the link to the insight. It sounds like if I'm lucky and follow an increased oil change regimine, I could do very well with the vehicle. But, it doesn't sound like my old Explorer that ran no matter how I abused it.

I appreciate you assistance. I think I may go through with the replacement as a good project anyway if I can find some good advise on the best procedure. I like this type of fun. Have always been a bit of a tinkerer anyway.

Best regards,

ScubaDave
