so - whats the verdict ? ive read lots of different and conflicting posts on this subject. my manual says to change the timing belt at 60000 miles.last time i changed it at 95000 miles.right now ive got 75000 on this belt.the thing is - its an expensive thing to have done.so i dont want to do it any more than necessary you know ? it cost like $800 last time.i really think every 100000 is fine.looking for input.thanks!

The DOHC 3.2 is non interferance. Isuzu changed the service interval on timing belts for those to 100k miles because of that and the fact that there hasnt been a problem of them breaking before then. There is a TSB out for that but I dont have the number handy at the moment.

I have heard conflicting reports about the SOHC 3.2. The tolerences are closer on those engines. I think it is non interferance but under the right conditions it may be possible for the pistons to hit the valves.

Its TSB number SB99-01-S002. What I have is a pdf file. If you really want it send me a PM with your email addy and I can email it to you.

It is actually for the 98 rodeo/amigo/trooper (which have the DOHC engines) and says the timing belt change interval has been changed from 75k mile to 100k miles for normal vehicle use to follow the interval of the 99 model year schedule. Still 75k miles for severe driving conditions.

There is another one that says the same for all 98+ DOHC vehicles and the reason why but I guess I didnt d/l that one. I cant find it on my puter.

I wasnt aware that any isuzu's had the DOHC before '98. After some googling I found out the92+ (second gen) S model troopers came with SOHC and LS/RS models came with DOHC. It looks like the earlier trooper DOHC has a different t belt set up the the 98+DOHC so I'm not sure if the same change interval applies.

Trooper UX 10/91-10/95, 6VD1, DOHC, 24 valve, belt drive cams with chain drive from cam to cam

Rodeo 7/97-01, Amigo 1/98-01, 6VD1, DOHC, 24 valve, belt drive cams with gear drive cam to cam

Guess you learn something new every day. Sorry I cant be more help on it. You can check with the guys at http://www.itog.com/they know everything about troopers.

This is a non-interference, free-running engine. The truck will definitely stop running if the t-belt breaks, but you won't destroy pistons & valves. Cheers,

David
