1994 trooper timing problem
Hello all, i'm looking for some help with my bro inlaws trooper. It's a 94 with a v6 dual overhead cam and the tensioner came apart and the belt skipped some notches. It was running before we took the timing covers and belt off. From what i've read so far to retime it you turn the crank clockwise until the timing notch on the crank pully lines up with the timing mark on the block that is in the 3 oclock position. Then the driver side cam has a painted mark on the face of the cam pully that lines up with a small notch on the rear timing cover that is located at about 1 oclock. There are the same marks on the pasenger side cam pully but the notch on the rear cover is at about 8 oclock and whe you rotatet the cam the timing mark on the face of the cam pully does not line up with it at all. So do I just start on the drivers side and line up the timimng mark on the belt with the timing mark on the cam pulley and work down to the crank and back up to the passenger side and rotate that cam until it lines up with the other timing mark on the belt? I think this is right I just want to make sure i'm not missing something because I believe this is an interference motor. Also I think it is not the factory motor as all the parts books says it is suposed to take a 220 size belt but this motor takes a 221 size belt. I don't think that makes any difference, just wanted to mention it. Thanks for any help.

So I had some time to talk to a good mechanic in town and here's what I found out. It's not an interference motor. The 4 cylinders are but the v6s are not. I've read several places online where people say that they are but apparantly they are giving some very bad advice. So you set the crank so that the timing notch and keyway are in the 3 oclock position. There will also be an alignment mark on the crank pully at the 9 oclock position. The dotted line on the timing belt needs to align with the 9 oclock timing mark. Work your way counterclockwise to the drivers side crank and align the solid line on the timing belt to the timing mark on the cam pully making sure it also aligns with the timing mark on the rear timing cover, same for the passenger side cam. Install tensioner pully and all is good. I'm gonna do this tonight and post up how it goes so hopefully others can learn from this as well.
