Winter and Power mode

I just got a 2001 V6 Rodeo 4x4 auto trans. The thing runs well but if I dont use super in it it sounds like its detonating. I was wondering if the "winter/power" mode buttons had anything to do with that both are off.I assume the "winter mode" makes itstart off in 2nd or something,but what about the "power mode"

Those buttons change how the transmission shifts. The power mode increases the shift points. Power mode is usually used in towing or hilly areas.
