Default hot oil smell

97 V6 auto

Does not burn oil, does not drip any either and the pressure is around 50 psi. Temp is where it's always been and is good. When it's up to operating temp and stopped it smells of hot oil. Does not smell in the cabin under any combo of fan, heater or AC. It only smells on the outside. Ideas?

TIA

My '95 does it, and the culprit is bad valve cover gaskets. You have to let it sit a few days and some oil build up to see where the smoke is coming off the exhaust manifolds. If you just keep driving it the oil burns off too gradually and won't actually smoke.

my 96 had that problem. valve cover gaskets. after the repair your going to have to clean the engine where the oil leaked or it will continue to burn off for a while and you will still have that smell.

thanks everyone. Got out there with a mechanics mirror and yup it's a weeping gasket way round the back. Nothing I'm overly worried about just yet as it's about a 1/4 pint every 3k miles that's disappearing.
