Okay, so here's my story, & don't be shy - if I'm crazy for even considering this, just say so...

I have a 1991 (first year) Rodeo XS 2wd that I got last fall for $1200. It's got 180kmi, it's the 3.1 auto, and (drumroll...) it's 100% original. Even better, it's in beautiful shape - no body cancer. Frame needs a clean & coat and front fender needs a swap (local upullit - $17) but other than that the body is prime. The engine has a bad gasket someplace & it leaks oil - problem is, my lazy @$$ didn't check the oil often enough in January cuz it was wicked cold out & I didnt feel like it. So now it's got a knock in it, and in gear at idle it sounds like a diesel. I recorded it & sent it to a friend, he swears its a crank bearing 0_0 Around 2000 rpm on the highway if i go much past 1/3rd throttle the truck shakes like hell & it's got no ***** anymore, like hills on the highway itll only climb at about 55 instead of 80 like it used to.

I'd really hate to waste a truck that has such a great body & handles like a car, and I cant afford to just go buy another one. So what I'm considering doing is going to the upullit yard here & getting another engine to drop in, but I'm also considering getting all the stuff I need to convert it to a 4x4. I looked up most of the stuff I DO know/think I'd need - trans, transfer case, front diff, axles, hell even another engine - and all the major stuff will cost about 400. I don't even care about all the electricals and sensors etc, as long as its mechanically functional its cool by me.

So here's my question - what all do I need to convert my 91 to a 4x4 (what other years have compatible parts?) and am I crazy for even trying it? Thanks in advance for the tips advice & pointers!
