I'm gettin a 96 Rodeo 5 spd. from my ma. But it will only move in 4th, the rest when you shift in it makes a high pitched grinding type noise, but 4th works great. Was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on what this could be, any info would be great, and thanks in advance.

You have an input gear and counter shaft that is worn due to lack of lube and overheat . I have seen them where all the teeth are worn off the gear. Normally, if it is a 4x4, the seals between the transmission and the transfer case sections of the unit is leaking and the oil has leaked out of the trans into the transfer. It also can be caused by "flat towing" without disconecting the driveshaft . There is no cheap fix .

so I have to replace the tranny then? and what vehicles can I take a 5 spd from? it's a v6 if that helps. I think I've heard that it can come from a cavelier, and some others....thanks again for the help, much appreciated

The only vech. I know is the Rodeo or Honda Passport. I am not sure if the trooper is the same. I know that it will bolt up but I don't know if the ratio is the same. I will try to look it up and post again tomorrow.
