The FNG
Moved to the northwest back in August, and having brought only one vehicle from Germany, I bought a V6 auto Rodeo, 1997.
It had some issues, and fortunately, I met a retired guy who was nice enough to take me under his wing and has helped me out at the autocraft shop and at the local wrecking yards (I've never had any training in automotives). Since August, we've:
- installed a new altenator
- new front ball joints
- new hood (old one was flaking clear coat)
- window motor and door lock in right passenger door)
- installed factory tinted glass in rear doors
- replaced lock in rear hatch
- replaced main controller on door (windows and locks)
- right hub (had a couple of welded bolts)
Before I met him I paid Les Schwab to do the brakes and tires (I've been told brakes are easy -- and maybe they would be if I could see it done -- but I like my car to stop).
The last problem being tackled is the 4 X 4. We've replaced the electronic control twice. We can engage 4x4 by by-passing it, but not through the contols. Maybe it's electronic or the vacuum. I dunno. So I've ordered manual locking hubs and we will install those and forget about the danged gizmo.
That's my story in a nutshell. I look forward to reading hints and advice to maximize the value of my 'hooptie'. I'll try not to be too ignorant, and will gladly listen to unsolicited advice as well.
Just go slow. I'm not a mechanic!
