91 Trooper wont start
#1
I just changed the 2.6 lt motor in my acousin'd Trooper II. The timing is correct and there is fuel in the injector rail but the car won't start. It tries but just won't get there. There is white smoke if I crank long enought. There is good oil pressure and using starting fluid won't get things going. I have not changed the plugs and wonder if that may be the problem.

Update--i have changed the spark plug and the motor will still not start. It acts as if it wants to but just doesn't get there. Is there a plug in that is hidden that I may have forgotten to plug in? I did have to switch the intake over to the new motor and could have left off something. It must not be getting fuel because the timing is right and the cam to crank timing is alright. I have set the valves and they are not too tight (.006 int and .010 exh). Any help would be appriciated.

first of all stop using starting fluid, just use carb cleaner.check to make sure you have spark, fuel psi needs to be 50psi ,compression should be 150 all clyinders.if not the timing is not correct.either at the distributor or the belt is 180 degre off.for some reasons after an engine swap or head replacement.these engines need to be set up on number 4 clyinder.instead of number 1 like you would normally would do.recheck your timing an aligning number 4 clyinder to top dead center first.

Exactly how do you set up the #4 cly to be at top dead center. I checked the timing with a light and it is dead on. There is spark at the plugs and the valves are set correctly. The engine wants to start but just won't make it.
