I just bought a 91 impulse turbo awd 150,000km. it was sitting in storage for 7 years. The timing belt was off a couple teeth, missing in cylinder #4. I fixed those problems. Is it a interference motor? another question is when i had the engine running a took it for a quick driveI noticedthe turbo glowing red, is that from running lean or the exhaust plugged. I has no power it feels like the computer holding the timing back.

Turbine,

Nice buy. I also have a 91 impulse with the turbo, awd, abs, lotus handling and sunroof. I have had mine since Jan of 99 and put about 50k miles on it. It has been a great car.

As for the turbo, I don't know what's wrong, but it shouldn't get red hot. It sounds like something is blocked or seized. I bet that there isn't anything wrong with the computer, but just the turbo. Since turbo runs off exhaust pressure if it isn't turning right it could be holding the exhaust in and all of that heat. I'm sorry I don't have any advice on how to fix it.

the motors are non interference. the cat is probably rusty and plugging up your exhaust.

what i would do is either remove the cat altogether by welding in a pipe (or making a down pipe) .

or spend a bunch and get a manifold from WWW.TURBINETECH.CA (go to
products then manifolds the click on the hall of fame hypertext)and a
subaru vf38 turbo + a haltech ECM to control the fuel ( which plugs
into the stock harness but you have to dyno tune it )and you have
a 280hp awd turbo honda killing machine . youll need a new clutch as
well. the limits of these cars with the turbo motors are in
excess of 400 hp its the rare awd drivetrain that will brake. but
should hold 300 hp as long as you dont do awd burnouts and 6000rpm
clutch drops only 800 in north america.

I don't know much about turbos but maybe it could be that its not getting enough lubrication to the bearings andheating up.

Nice buy...i saw an impulse RS for the first time the other day and they look so badass......im now on the search of finding one for sale.

I have a 91 Impulse RS (turbo, AWD, ABS, lotus handling, sunroof). It is time to get a larger car and I would like to sell it to someone who enjoy it. It runs good. I could trade it in but I'd rather sell it to somebody who would know what they had. If interested reply to this message.

could be something as simple as the O2 sensor

There's nothing wrong if it's nighttime and you can see the hot side of the turbo glowing a bit red if you've been running it hard. Don't forget people, EGTs on a well-tuned turbo car are in the 1200-1500 deg F range. That's pretty f'in hot!

But if it's the middle of the day and you can easily see your turbo glowing red as a fire engine, then yeah, that is cause for concern. Has the boost been turned up beyond what the turbo is capable of? That could explain the sluggishness, if some jacktardturned theboost way upwithout doing anything else, then the ECU might be cutting fuel to save the engine. That reminds me, what turbos do these cars have stock?

As others have suggested, is there a clog somewhere?Edited by: subyluvr2212
