Hello, I am new to this site just found it while looking for info on my 89 trooper. I have tried to pass the required emissions test in my area and failed. I had moved up to adjusting the valves when I noticed it wasn't on #1 tdc or #4 tdc when it should be, so I took the timing cover off and the PO had installed a new timing belt but it appears it is off by about 20-25 degrees. What is my best option at this point? Thanks, Loren< src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" ="text/"></>< ="text/">_uacct = "UA-939292-44";

pull the timing gear off and adjust it to the correct timing. If you still dont pass emissions test your EGR valve with a hand held vacume pump to see thethe diaphram is holding vacume if not replace it. Its part fo the emissions system. If thats not it check your smog pump. have a look at your Catalytic converter they do wear out.

Thanks, I actually ended up changing the timing belt, during that change I discovered that the harmonic balancer had been pulled apart and the outer belt section put back on wrong. I changed the O2 sensor 7 different cracked vacuum lines. then I put a pint of acetone in the fuel tank, ran it one day then tested it again. passed with room to spare. thanks, Loren< src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" ="text/"></>< ="text/">_uacct = "UA-939292-44";

cool. rigth now i have my timing gear, belt, cam and valvetrain pull out cause I have really noisy tappets. Also could smell fuel really bad when running so had to search for it. found out the problem was some genious decided the fuel injector didnt need a o ring and that the fuel rail only needed one bolt too so when the engien ran the fuel injector was vibrating inand out of the hole leaking fuel . lol Nice knowing Icould have had a nice engine fire at anytime. goodthing the exhaust manifold is on the other side.

Also need to replace ALL the vacume lines, seems the same person thought it would be fine to just stretch a little old line over somethingtwice as big. Vacume leak like crazy. then he/her didntknow how to install spark plugs either and stripped out on of the spark plug hole threads. nice.

alot of work to do to it to get it running right. but the funpart is at least with the motor tore apart i get to paint all the peices and make it look baddass. I already painted the valve cover w/ DupliColor Chevy Blue Engine Enamel.

Yes I also replaced the catalytic converter, all the plugs , cap , rotor , wires, I also like to paint the pieces while out, but I "brushed" the aluminum valve cover and it looks better than paint {I think anyway}. My tappets are noisier now than before setting them properly. Our vehicles must have had the same stupid previous owner. < src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" ="text/"></>< ="text/">_uacct = "UA-939292-44";
