I recently had the front bearings in my 98 Rodeo changed. Took my truck to a dirt road to test 4X4. The green light just keeps flashing and I get no 4X4. Took it back to the mechanic and he told me the front axles had nothing to do with the 4X4 system. Is he correct or did my 4X4 just fail at a perfect time?

i would get a second opinion, and then go back on him.

If the 4x4 shifter is anything like chevys (Chevy and Isuzu are in cohoots aren't they) the solenoid for locking the front axle are known to go bad on those rather frequently. I haven't even got a chance to look under mine yet so take this with a grain of salt, but I would check and see if your front diff has a solenoid sticking in it.

How do you know the 4x4 wasnt engaging?

there are shift solenoids on the ft axle they always go bad,an make sure the vacuum hose on the side of the intake is connected.if your model has them underneath the hood beside the brake booster in the far corner,it maybe the controller under the center consol, both parts are pricey,so get it checked at you dealer first.before throwing parts at it.also you can tell when its not in 4wd by making sharp turns.if you dont feel it binding when turning in 4wd mode its not engaged.you can definatly feel the difference from 4wd to 2wd
