I had a 1990 amigo 2.6l ,4wd that had a starting problem. It would crank over sputter a couple of seconds and die. The only way I could get it to start was to hold the gas pedal down while cranking. I knew that it was something simple but it drove me nuts for a year and a half. When I sold it to a neighbor he took it into the shop, when they disconnected the alternator it would start up and run perfect every time and when the reconnected the alternator it would go back to what it was doing. Turns out a diode in the alternator went bad. After doing some research it turns out the fuelpump is some how wired in with the charging system. Try disconnecting your alternator and starting your engine, if it starts and runs I would have your alternator checked. If you need a new alternater get one from NAPA, or have yours rebuilt. My neighbor went with a cheap one, it went bad and had the starting problems again.
