2.2L Starter Removal

Hello all! I am trying to help a friend replace the starter on his 98 Amigo with the 2.2L, we fought with it for a few hours today but it got to dark and we where tired of messing with it. I have been looking around for the best way to replace it and am unable to find anything, anything i have found says you need to remove the y-pipe for the exhaust but the starter on this one is on the passenger side. I have a friend that works at GM and he looked it up on their data base and it says the same thing. We have the bottom bolt that comes in from the front removed but we are unable to get to the top bolt and still have enough room to move the ratchet. the other issue we are having is getting to the power connectors for the starter, the only access we can see to the starter is a 3ish inch wide spot between the Radius Arm and the front Drive shaft. Do we need to remove the intake to replace the starter? I hope some one has some insight and there is some thing simple I am over looking. Thanks in advanced.
