94 Trooper "issues"
#1
ok so... here we go.
hello people, this is my first post here and im hoping to recieve some
feedback. I just recently acquired my first Trooper. Its a 94 3.2 MT
model and is having a few issues. I bought this in hopes of turning it
into an offroad beast but... we'll see.
First off, it starts up fine everytime but it does have a ticking sound
coming from the passenger side of the engine, or so it sounds. its not
terribly loud but it does speed up as the rpms go up.
Next, it leaks a lot of water/ coolant while running and not, i seem to
be adding coolant to the radiator every morning. I was told it was the
water pump so I will probably swap that out soon. sound right? anyone got one for sale?
After driving for about 20 mins the center consol above the tranny
heats up pretty good and a lot of hot air is expelled through the shift
boot onto my hand. I dont smell any burning but it just doesnt seem right. - maybe just trans fluid?
Lastly when accelerating (mostly in 2nd and 3rd and between 2 and 3K
rpms) the car lurches forward rather than smoothly accellerating. I
have to ride the clutch to keep it smooth. Is the clutch going out?
I tried to explain the problems in detail hopefully to get some good feedback. Please reply with any info. THANKS!

Mine sounds like a cummins diesel, Ive taken it on 6, 1000mi road trips with no issues.
The water leak, sounds like a water pump issue to me. Dont buy a used one unless you can find one that was used for very little miles, just go to pep boys or napa and buy a new one. Wont be too much $$...
The center counsol, mine got hot also. Might wanna check the fluid in the tranny. It will get a little warm though...also, make sure the heat shield is under the truck/above the exhaust.
Your clutch, sounds like its going out.
The trooper can be a very sweet offroad vehicle, when its all good. I ran mine on a humvee trail, on a Marine Corps base...no problems at all, 100% stock. (and a BFG AT tire)
check out calmini for offroad products.

I have a 95 and have done what seems like and ever lasting research project and I love it.
The trooper 3.2 is load engine sometimes confused with a diesel (the quietest diesel ever made evidentially) If you think its loader than that then you may have a timeing belt issue. I just learned this on another forum. The timeing belt tensioner can sometimes make a noise that is confused with a spun bearing. The fact that the other gentlemen thinks that the water problem could be a water pump worries me. Most respecible shop will replace the water pump when they replace the timing belt. Its about the labor costs if your that far down in to the engine its worth replacing it.
Let me know what you find out.
