Default Charging Issue

A friend sold me his 87 S10 with a 1.8L diesel 4fb1 conversion.

I've been chasing some problems, and asking a lot of questions on the Isuzu Pup forum.

I figured I would also join this forum too.

Right now, my biggest problem is the charging circuit. My friend bought an alternator to replace an old one that wasn't charging. He accidentally bought the unit for the C223, but his mechanic installed it.

When I got the truck, the new alternator had never been able to charge the battery. I took the unit to be tested, and the test failed because the charging light circuit was broken.

I then bought a new alternator that is made for the 4fb1, and it's now in the mail.

I've been tracing wires, and I can't find a charging relay, even though I'm under the impression that this engine should have one.

If that circuit was left out of the conversion for some reason, would it be the reason the alternator failed?

Would it be possible to add, or bypass that circuit?

I don't want to put the new alternator in and immediately burn it out if this is a persistent problem.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Hmm you mentioned that the "your friend bought an alternator to replace an old one that wasn't charging. He accidentally bought the unit for the C223, but his mechanic installed it" So most likely the wiring and mounting was altered by this time.
