Default 1997 Rodeo Sport 4x4 transmission replacement question

I bought a 1997 Rodeo a couple of years ago and found that the the engine/transmission was replaced or removed at some time by the sound of it. Worked fine for the first year but I noticed it was shifting into second at 30 mph only sometimes at 22 when it seemed to be running better.

The transmission has always leaked a little so I have had to top it up when necessary. However the problem with shifting has been getting worse.

Changed the filter and gasket and found some plastic parts sitting on top of the filter. Put everything back together and refilled and was running ok until the reverse starting working badly. Still engaged but moved with lower power. Checked fluid level. Level was fine. After a few months I am now having the problem going forward when needing power going up hill etc.

I figure I need a new tranny. The question is: Can it be replaced at home or is it necessary to have a lift to clear the bottom?

Also wanted to know how reliable the transmissions are. Should I be safe and purchase a rebuilt tranny?
