Default side view mirror swings back and fort

I just started driving my wifes 99 Rodeo and it seems my side view mirror just swings and actually comes all the way out. I have read all over the place that there is a lock somewhere behind the actual mirror face that will allow me to take off the mirror or dismantle the mirror housing to get to the lug nut and spring that will let me install my mirror back properly given that nothing is actually broken.
I just cant seem to find any details or pictures of how to pop the side view mirror open.
I know its going to be something simple, i just cant figure it out and its driving me crazy.
it is a base model so it is not a power mirror.

Thanks in advance.

Question Loose mirror housing

Reviving an old post, I see, but is there a fix for this? My 2004 is doing the same thing on driver's side. I was able to just lift it straight up and off when I came to a stop, and there's lots of rattling from things inside!!! Is there a repair kit of any kind, or best to check out the salvage yards?

*** Is there a "special tool" to remove the glass? I'm prying and can somewhat see 4 clips at the corners, but it's still holding on tight... don't want to break glass, if possible! Perhaps the housing can be saved if all the pieces are inside and not broken....

Re-Reviving this old post.
This just happened to me this morning.
They are manual adjusted mirrors not electric.
How to reattach the mirror to mounting post?
I have all the parts and ball bearings.

Default Just happened to me also how I fixed it

I folded my wife’s driver side mirror on her 02 this morning and it popped and then it would free swing.

This is how I fixed (I did not take notes so steps are from memory, sport not pictures)

I removed the mirror from suv
Black triangle trim on the inside of door will pop off
Remove the three 10 mil bolts
Unplug wires

remove the wires from the plug

disassemble the mirror
Remove three clear sticker below mount hinge to expose and remove three philips screws

pull the wires through the lower half of the hinge and set aside

you should see where a spring clip holding the spring in place has popped off.

I removed the glass from the plastic frame

unplugged wires for heated glass

removed one screw for frame
Removed four screws for actuator
removed the wire from housing

I drilled holes in the shaft above where the clip held the spring and put in a cotter pin after putting the spring, cap and clip back on. If this fails I will a thread on a nut with a free spinning washer.
