I have a 2002 v6 2wd. Every once in a while I will go to start it and I turn the key and only a click. It may do this two or three times then starts perfect with no other issues. It has done this 5 times in the past 4 months. The mechanic says he can't diagnose it if it is not doing it. Does this sound like the starter. sSould I change it now. I don't want to get stuck somewhere.

 

well how old is the battery test the voltage in the battery replace it if its under 12v, does this happen after a long period of sitting ie first start up in the morning or anytime you try to start it if its just after a long period of in activity then bad battery or you have a draw pulling power somewhere and its killing the battery overnight. usually when it clicks when you try to start it its not getting enough voltage also check the ground wire you may need to replace that as well. now if the mechanic says he cant diagnose if its not doing it you need to find another mechanic cause there are plenty of things that need to be checked ie battery, ground (battery cables), alternator, then the starter

 

You problem is most likely the contacts in the starters solenoid. We replace them at work all the time. Eventually your it will just click and not start. Parts will be about $20.
