I had a similar problem with my 98 Rodeo 3.2. OBDII codes were PO174 and P1133 but the cause was a leaking intake manifold gasket. I replaced the gaskets (thanks to this forum) and the problem was solved. But now, 10,000 miles later, it is doing the same thing as yours, and the problem is not the gaskets. So I am watching your posts in hope of some clues.

When my rodeo was doing this it ended up being the coil. At first the problem was just occasional but then grew to where it wasn't firing at all. it didn't give any clue of a misfire though because the 2 cylinders on the coil are on the same stroke and it didn't create an imbalance in the engine. the only symtom is it gets very sluggish and can't get out of its own way (firing on 4 cyls). again this problem wasn't apparent until the coil actually failed completely.
