Starter is toast

My starter is going out. I can go buy a new one or a rebuilt one. So I need to know how to get in there and replace it. Does anybody know how I may do this? I looked in the haynes manual but it did not really help at all. Is it best to do it underneath or up top under the hood. What tools are needed? Pobably pretty ametuer stuff but thats what I am. Any help will be great guys, Thanks alot!!

Don't have a clue, but just wanted to tell you we just had ours replaced (1997 Trooper). It was $400 for parts and labor. Good luck with doing it yourself! [img]smileys/smiley1.gif[/img]

On my '96 Trooper I was able to get the starter un-attached, but could not get it out due to the driver's side exhaust plumbing being in the way. I tried lowering that section of exhaust pipe, but the nuts were stuck fast. I ended up buying a rebuilt starter from a parts supplier, and had a local Isuzu dealership install it. Bummer. So far I've gotten over 57k miles out of the rebuilt starter, so I have no complaints.

I just tried replacing my starter lastnight...& let me tell you, there is no easy way. I was able to move the exhaust over enough to remove the old starter. No special tools required but patience. Got the new one installed but now it won't crank. I've tested the new starter by crossing the terminals & it turns the engine over, however, nothing happens via the key ignition.
It's cramp quarters so if you're not a gear head, you're probably better off having a professional do it.

KCROKER is correct...Patience is what you need on this. I was able to do this with a lot of help from my bro in law.
1. Jack up the car.
2. Remove the driver''s side tire.
Then you can visually see the starter. Now try and remove the failing starter..."trooper"! hehehehe
3. As KCROCKER said "move the exhaust over enough to remove the old starter. No special tools required but patience. "
