View Full Version : ABS Speed Sensor - REAR
gibsaenz 02-07-2006, 03:58 PM Hello this is my first time here. I have been having trouble with my 1998 Rodeo 4x4... The ABS light is always on, I took it in and they couldnt find out what was causing the light to be on. At times, now this has happened 3 times, the light will be on and just turn off while I'm driving and the brakes dont work. I rear-ended one car due to this problem already. So I need this fixed ASAP.
The dealer stated it could be the ABS Speed Sensorin theRear, so I was going to give that a shot and replace it. What I'm wanting to know if its that hard to replace. And what tools will I need. Any help would be greatly appricated.
Thanks so much!
ISUZUGURU 02-08-2006, 02:53 PM THE WIRING HARNESS TO THE SENSOR BREAKS.THE DEALER SELLS AN UPDATED ONE FOR 50 DOLLARS.THE SENSOR IS AT THE TOP OF YOUR REAR DIFF.FOLLOW THE WIRE AROUND BEHIND THE LEFT REAR WHEEL TO THE CONNECTOR THE WIRES ARE BROKEN THERE.THEY MAY APPEAR OK,BUT GIVE THEM A SLIGHT TUG,YOU,LL NOTICE THEY WILL COME APART.GET THE NEW HARNESS AN BUTT CONNECT THE NEW ONE BACK IN PLACE.ITS ALSO NOT HARD TO FIX YOUR SELF.ONCE FIX DRIVE THE VEHILCE AN THE ABS LIGHT WILL CLEAR.
IF THE SENSOR IS BAD,THERE,S ONLY ONE SCREWTHAT HOLDS IT IN PLACE BUT REMOVING THE SENSOR,TAKE YOUR TIME AN MAKE SURE IT COMES STRAIGHT OUT,DONT LET IT BREAK OFF INTO THE REAR END.Edited by: ISUZUGURU
gibsaenz 02-08-2006, 03:30 PM ISUZUGURU THANKS!!!
I checked the wiring and it didnt seem like the wires were broken. All the wires are coming from the sensor are wrapped in a black plastic tubing... Should I take off that plastic tubing and recheck all the wiring? Is the wires breaking more common than the sensor going out? I checked the wires by the harness/sensor and they all seem in good shape.
Thanks a million?
ISUZUGURU 02-09-2006, 11:26 PM the wires break right at the connector to the body harness.not at the sensor, but at the other end of the harness.look at it closely.an give it a gentle tug at the wires there.i dont have any pics to send you to help.but if you stand or lok by the left rear wheel,an look near the corner of the fuel tank you,ll see the connector, check it there. you dont have to check under the plastic tubing, they dont break there.an yes the wires break more than the sensors do.isuzu made the harness to short so they snap.the updated harness is longer to repair the problem.Edited by: ISUZUGURU
gibsaenz 02-10-2006, 03:06 AM Thanks for information! I have a question, if the wires are broken would the ASB light always be on, or will it be on and turn off at times? I would think if the wires were broken the light would always be on... My ABS light turns on and off at times.
I'm going to check the wires this weekend and see what I find. So what I'm suppose to do is follow the wires from the ABS Speed Sensor harness and follow the wires to the left rear wheel/corner of the fuel tank?
Thanks
gibsaenz 02-10-2006, 03:44 PM Ok if it is the wiring harness to the ABSSpeedSensor, Does it have a different name other than wiring harness to the ABS Speed Sensor? I just want to know that way when I call the dealer they will know what I'm talking about.
Thank!!!
ISUZUGURU 02-10-2006, 11:56 PM no it doesnt have a different name.just say your looking for the updated wiring harness for the rear speed sensor for your rodeo.since this info is usaully only known by the technicians, there proably mention that they should install it an have the diag it for you.the job is not that technical.an yes the abs light will flash before it breaks completly.thats the sign of intermitant loss of signal finally before a complete loss.OH...... i forgot to mention this also.....your rodeo has a recall on the abs module if you havent done so yet.call your dealer an give them the vin number.if you want....e-mail me your vin number i can check it for you myself, since i do work for a isuzu dealer i can access that info online myself.i can even tell you what warrenty work has been done to that vehicle,it will be good info for you to know if you didnt buy the vehicle new.i dont understand why the dealer didnt fix the problem when you took i tto them was the light on at the time? anyway......send me your vin number.....i,ll write back what i found. bradley9231@netzero.net
gibsaenz 02-11-2006, 07:23 PM Ok I finally got enough time to check all the wiring for my ABS system.. I checked the rear wiring harness and the first thing I noticed was black electric tape wrapped around the wires. I took off all the tape and found the the wires will all butted together nicely! and no loose wires, I gently pulled the wires to see if any were loose and nothing.. To me it looks like it already had the updated wiring harness. I wrapped it back up with some tape and zip clipped it back in place.
I then pulled the Rear ABS Speed Sensor, andcleaned all that out.
I heading out of town this evening so I will be able tosee if the ABS light still comes on. I will let all you knowlate this evening.
If the ABS light does come back on, what do you think itmight be?
ISUZUGURU I will email you my VIN shortly, that would be great if you can run my VIN for me!!!
ISUZUGURU 02-11-2006, 10:07 PM i e-mailed you a responce,
gibsaenz 02-13-2006, 01:51 PM Good morning!
Yes I do live within the United States. I live in Sunnyside, WA zipcode 98944. I bought my Rodeo used and according to information that I have come across I guess my Rodeo was built and sold Brand new in Canada. Would you still be able to run my VIN number, since I live in the United States?
When I checked all the wires on Saturday, I pulled out the Rear ABS speed sensor and cleaned it all up. I dont know if any of this cleaning helped out, but I havent had the ABS light come on since Saturday. If the light does come back on I'm going to replace the Rear Speed Sensor, do you know where I can get one at a reasonable price?
ISUZUGURU 02-14-2006, 05:33 PM I,M NOT SURE WHERE YOU CAN GET ONE AFTERMARKET ,i never had to check all the ones i replaced has been isuzu.for some reason your vin number doesnt give me any info, either because it was canadian built or simply because it never had any warrenty work done back at the dealer.
gibsaenz 02-14-2006, 07:23 PM What I was told, was that since my Rodeo was built in Canada the VIN is Canadian and wont be able to be run on over in the US.
As of today the ABS light has not come back on since Saturday.I just hope it stays off! But in the case that it doesntwhatdo you thinkabout getting a REAR ABS Speed Sensor from a wreaking yard? Its coming off a Rodeo that had front end damage.
Another question, I'm hearing a rattling sound for the pass.side dash. Can I pull the Air bag cover on the dash off without messing up the airbag?
mananambal 09-24-2007, 03:00 AM Hi ISUZUGURU,
I have the same ABS light always on problem and is wondering if this is the Rear speed sensor / wire harness you were referrring to, that should be checked for the lighted ABS on the dash? I tried giving it a gentle tug and it seemed to be ok, then checked the ABS light and it was still on.
mananambal 09-24-2007, 03:04 AM Sorry about that... Tried attaching a photo on my previous post but it did not go through.. here goes another try...

Gizmo42 09-24-2007, 07:26 PM Thats the right harness, but if you follow it up the upper axle link to where that wiring connects into the main harness is where it usually is broken. Sometimes there is a plug there, sometimes its just tied into the wiring.
Seems most ppl the pull the abs fuse and take the bulb out of the instrument cluster. Isuzu never got ABS figured out right and alot of ppl have trouble with it not working right.
Dacount 10-29-2007, 09:17 PM Would this problem with the harness also cause the RABS and the Brake along with the Check trans light come on? I have a 95 1/2 model Rodeo Automatic.
